Guest House Didovi » About Us
The house is located directly next to the house-museum of the Bulgarian poet and revolutionist Hristo Botev.
Come and become a part of the town atmosphere - at Christmas-tide, on St. Stefan’s day, St. Ivan’s day, St. Yordan’s day (throwing the crucifix), at Shrovetide (the kuker feast), on the day of St. George (barbecue with the traditional “Georgyov” lamb, during the night bringing beech-branches and hanging them up on the house doors). By the end of May is the rose-picking season of the oil-bearing roses, which made Bulgaria world famous with the rose-oil of the highest quality. The big foreign perfume companies use this oil in some of their most famous perfumes.
People commemorate the heroic dead of Hristo Botev on the national holiday, the 2nd of June and there are a traditional town fair and a conventional motocross near the countryside of “Panitsite” (the “Bowls”) taking place. On the feast of “Kirek”, the last Sunday in July the citizen of Kalofer give honour to the saints and rest all round the riversides of Tundzha and Byala Reka.
Beside of the house of Botev there are a number of sights to be seen in Kalofer – the school of the schoolmaster Botyo Petkov (the father of Botev), the monument of Botev, the monument of the soldier leader Kalifer, a great number of churches, two cloisters - a male monastery and a nunnery, and also many chapels.
There is God's plenty of nature wonders in the mountains around Kalofer- the Botev peak, “Pryaspata” (it is an all year snow-drift, which “tans” in the summer), “Rayskoto praskalo” (“Heavenly Spray”) - it is the highest waterfall on the Balkans, the water falls down from over 120 m), “Hizha Rai” (the “Paradise” hut), the reserve “Dzhendem” with its unique plants, insects and animals, for example the black bear, the red deer and lots of other animals.
The river Tundzha springs from the Balkan Mountains from the region of “Pileshki Polog” (the “Chickennest”), goes through the area of “Panitsite”, floats downstream, divides Kalofer in two parts and continues its way. The Byala River (also known as Korniytsa) is clear, characteristic of its blue pools filled with mountains trout. It is formed by the joining of some small streams, which split the reserve “South Dzhendem”, passes by wild and fascinating abysses (a part of them can be seen on the ecological path “Byala Reka” and calms down in the valley of the Upper Korniytsa.
A Small Monastery is perched on the high screes and towers above the town. Downstream is situated the Male Monastery - once entered into it you will feel like you get to another world. The river is going on its way and passes by the chapel of St. Panteleymon, which the citizens of Kalofer honour and believe that its water has a healing power.
